About Me
My Name Is Nathan Akre... But you can call me Nate.
I am a senior at Newark Community High School. I am 6 feet, 5 inches tall... bet you feel pretty short right now, huh? I am the president of Student Council and help run our school's anti-bullying program, T.A.L.K. I am also involved in our school's theater program, student section, and am interning at a local grade school to learn how to teach math. So I bet you're asking youself why this tall guy taking an AP course on top of all the rest of his responsibilities.
That's a great question.
It all started when I took a class called "Pop Music" at our school. It was all about learning how to play guitar which was something I've always wanted to learn to do. I began learning all these chords and other basic music terminology. I had never a class before that I enjoyed so much. One of the best parts about it was that I didn't know anything going into that class. It was all new, and I loved that. Two years later, and I am still leading the worship band at my church every Sunday with my guitar and singing.
When I found out Newark was offering a course on AP Music Theory, it caught my attention. And my teacher, Ms. Chase, kept pushing me to take the class. I was hesitant. I mean, I can read simple music, but nothing advanced enough to be able to take a year long college level class on it. But after a lot of thought and ton of encouragement from Ms. Chase, I decided to sign up. And I have to say that I'm thankful I made that decision. The content is a lot, but it's actually pretty interesting! I'm interested to see how this class goes. I am hoping that I'll be able to keep up with the pace of the course and all the activities I'm involved in, but I am excited to dive into more music theory.
